What is Project Melanin Beauty?
Why I started Project Melanin Beauty?
She would say, "why is my hair so puffy? why doesn't it feel silky like my friends hair"? She wanted me to relax her hair with chemicals, so it can lay flat like her friends hair.
It was then we had a conversation about her hair and why it's different and why she should love her hair and be proud of the hair that God gave her.
I taught her the versatility of black hair and the many styles she can wear and now she loves it. She loves the fact that she could wear it straight, curly, or in a big afro and be beautiful! Not to mention she loves the attention she gets from her peers because they admire her hair; it's her crowning glory.
When I mentioned my story to other women, I found out that their daughters or young girls that they know also struggled with their identity, features and looks. At this point, I realized something needed to be done.
Who decided that if your hair wasn't a certain way, or your makeup didn't look a certain way, or your body wasn't built a particular way , that you weren't considered beautiful? It's tie to embrace our own individual uniqueness and love the skin we are in; and we come in all shades. No matter if your skin is really light, dark or in between; it's beautiful, it's distinct, it's yours and you should love and celebrate it.
It's time that black women and young black girls can look in the media and see themselves being represented positively. To see other women that look like them being confident and embracing their beauty, embracing their hair, their skin tone, their features and representing for black women everywhere.
